Getting your Upwork profile right is probably the most important thing you need to do if you want to be successful on Upwork.
In today's post, I'm going to share with you five really powerful tips on how to become a successful freelancer on Upwork.
So, if you want to know more then stick around and keep on reading. Here 5 basic and most important tips that take your frelancing carear into professional level.
- The title
- Choosing your tags
- Your overview
- Your portfolio
- Your profile picture
#1: The title
I'm seeing a lot of people, who are making the title. that they use on Upwork very busy, very complex, and very technical.
Don't try to hit multiple birds with one stone. make it simple and make it as clear as you possibly can and choose one thing that you want to focus on.
If you are let's say opting for a VA career, you want to be a virtual assistant don't just write VA and then add absolutely everything under the sun.
That a VA can do like copywriting, SEO research, email management, calendar management, and everything else.
Choose one, what are you best at and what do you want to focus on. so trying to simplify your title and making it as clear and simple as you possibly can make it or break it for you.
because people who are hiring on Upwork like myself will not go below and read the rest of your profile.
If they don't know from the get-go from the title, that you are the right person and you could be the right person to solve their need. So keep it simple focus on one thing.
Now my tips for you here is to phrase that in the customer's words, and also use it as your elevator pitch. that doesn't mean you need to do it in a long form.
keep it short and keep it almost like a tweet size. but explain there, what you are great at explaining there what you do and what your area of expertise is.
#2: Choosing your tags
I don't hear enough people on youtube and websites talking about tag selection on Upwork. but I think especially when you're starting out you need to pay attention to this.
The more experience you gather and the more you understand, how to do it and you get better at it or you end up not needing it.
Because, you get to the right level of experience on Upwork that their algorithm pushes you up anyway.
When you're just starting out, you want to make sure that, the tags you select for yourself are the right ones.
Make sure you pick only the ones that are very very specific to the niche. that you have selected for yourself.
We're going to come back to this one as we move later on in the other tips. but when you select the tags you want to stay away from going into uncharted territory.
Do not try to put everything under the sun. because you will confuse the algorithm. it's you know machine learning works the same way no matter what the platform is.
When you work on youtube, you want to pick the right keywords when you work on Instagram you want to use the right hashtags.
Well, when you work on Upwork you want to use the right tags. my advice to you especially if you're starting out is to pick only those that are directly relevant to your niche.
Don't try to branch out don't try to as I said earlier. hit multiple birds with one stone because algorithms do not work like that.
You need to tell it exactly what your niche is and you want to tell it exactly what you are so good at.
Because, they will stop showing you if people don't end up hiring you for that keyword or that search.
#3: Your overview
I could probably talk for hours about how to get your overview right and show you loads of mistakes that I have seen in terms of writing that overview.
But in my personal opinion, the overview is your sales letter. it's the landing page that you would need to have if you were not using Upwork but your own website.
It is the only thing that will make it or break it for you. that one thing that will convince whoever is looking to hire people like you to choose you.
And if you want to get it right, then you need to focus on one thing and that is building authority.
If you want to be selected then you want to make sure that in the overview, you establish yourself as an authority.
You want to make sure that you show whoever is looking to hire you. that you know exactly what you're talking about that you know that topic and you master it.
Inside and out and that you not only understand their need. but you're the best person to solve it.
#4: Your portfolio
I think your portfolio is that one place that will talk about you through the work that you've done without you having to say i am and I can do and I've done that is the proof of how much of an expert you are.
It is such a beautiful way for you to show not only that you understand your customer, you understand where they're coming from and you understand the challenges and the needs they have.
Also, that you are the one to solve them the best. you are the one that can address those needs and you are the one that can fix the problem for your customer.
So use your portfolio to show that about yourself. use it to showcase your best work.
Here, there are two main things that you need to keep in mind.
1. you don't want everything under the sun that you will have worked on you to want to focus on your best quality work. make sure you include only the top of the top the best of the best of what you have done.
2. make sure whatever you select is very very coherent with your title make sure that it fits your niche. because if you include things that are not related to your niche, then it doesn't support the story.
It doesn't support you as a quality freelancer. it doesn't show that you can solve the problem that they're so excited you can fix for them by reading your title or your overview.
So make sure there's consistency there and that you only include the ones that address your niche specifically.
#5: Your profile picture
I think this is one of those things that many people overlook. I've seen profiles without a picture. I've seen profiles with really bad pictures. I've seen profiles with really good pictures.
The picture is together with your title the first thing that somebody will see on your Upwork profile. when they land on your profile that's the first thing they look at.
You want to make sure that your picture shows you as an expert. you want to look like an expert in your picture and of course, you can play with it.
Depending on the type of freelancer you are and what type of services. you offer you can adjust the type of picture. you don't have to look professional.
If you are creative you can use a creative picture. but whatever type of freelancer you are. you want to make sure that you look like an expert.
Because, if you don't have a profile picture or your profile picture is not coherent with the rest of your profile, then it will be hard for you to land jobs.
Because that is the first step to establish that authority. it's the first step for you to become credible in front of your customer. so think about that and make sure you pick the right picture for your profile.
